Hello reader!
This post is about a book The Magic Drum and Other Favorite Stories by Sudha Murty. The book is a compilation of short stories and each story ends with a moral. Before you start wondering, this book’s intended audience is generally children, but I think its also important for older people to read as well.
First off Sudha Murty is a really good storyteller. I have read some of her other books and those managed to keep my interest (which is not easily done). However, this book is different than those other books. The Magic Drum has stories for children, but these stories and mostly the morals are important for everyone. Sometimes I feel like when people grow up and are considered proper adults they forget the simple things that are taught to children. Sometimes people forget to not spread lies, to not to be the person who cried wolf, to not be too greedy. My point is that people tend to forget the simple things, they forget the easy lessons. This book can reinforce those. And it doesn’t hurt that some of these stories are wholesome, like “The Seed of Truth” (one of my favorite). The story has such a nice, kind, wholesome ending while also teaching a person that perseverance with almost no results is not a bad thing. I think that at times because we get no results we think we have failed at what we are doing, but that’s not always the case. You can try really hard and not get any results, it does not mean you failed, it only means that now you know one way to not approach whatever problem you were trying to solve, and now you can try another approach.
I don’t think that just because something is meant for children should mean that adults and teenagers should stay away from it. Disney movies are meant for children, yet me, my mom, and other adults I know still enjoy Disney movies. I think it’s important that people are allowed to connect to their inner child and enjoy the simple things. It could be as simple as reading a children’s book or relaxing and eating your favorite ice cream. The Magic Drum might be a children’s book, but when you are older and want something easy and fun to read this book would not be a bad choice, and while you’re reading it you’ll be reminded of the more obvious morals you might have forgotten or the ones that are stored in the back of your mind.
SAPPINESS SCALE: HAPPY
Thanks for reading!
