Unique Anne

Hello and welcome back! Today I’ll be telling you about a show called “Anne with an E.” A quick disclaimer before I go on, the show was cancelled after three seasons, but it’s not much of an open ending, which is nice. Also it’s a Netflix original, so if you have Netflix you should be able to watch it (if you want).

The show is based in Canada at the end of the 1800s, and it is this beautiful period drama about Anne. She is a young redhead orphaned girl who gets adopted by an elderly brother and sister who actually wanted a boy to help on their farm. Events transpire and the Cuthbert siblings (Marilla and Matthew) adopt Anne. Anne has this amazingly unique personality that she isn’t afraid of showcasing, along with a fair amount of dramatics. Through the show, you see Anne make mistakes and learn from consequences and evolve into a mature, adventurous, and fearless young woman over three years.

Anne is dramatic and unique and breaks the gender boundaries, which makes her a woman ahead of her time, but at that time she’s labelled “dramatic” and “weird.” She is so different from the other girls her age, but she doesn’t let the stares and the comments and the overall narrow-mindedness of her small town change her, she manages to stay as brilliant and unique and amazing as she always was. I think that’s something really important that I took from the show is that people will stare and talk and there isn’t much to stop them, but you should also do your best to ignore them and stay true to yourself.

I will now take a moment for the so-called “supporting characters,” especially Gilbert Blythe. He is basically Anne’s rival in school, and she can’t have feelings for this boy because one of the other girls and her (eventual) friend has the biggest school-girl crush on this boy. They have a lowkey enemies to friends to lovers trope, and it is so cute with a bunch of fights and stares and so on. Gilbert is sometimes this clueless guy which is infuriating for Anne and adorable to watch. He is also basically as smart as Anne, like they are on the same level of intelligence, Anne is just more outspoken and unafraid about what she believes in. Other supporting characters I really loved are Marilla and Matthew. Throughout the show we see them become parents to this absolutely amazing young girl with the freest spirit and they learn so much from her as she does from them. Honestly the entire small town learns from Anne and she learns from her multiple hiccups. All of the characters are so perfectly portrayed by their actors, you can really understand their feelings and thoughts (so hats off to the actors and writers).

The show also tackles important topics like gender roles and women’s place in society, sexuality, and some other things. These issues were much bigger then but it still relates to our time as well and those shows are so well written and done. Honestly the whole show is beautiful, from everything about Anne to things about society. And the show is relatable on those same things!
