Your Spark

Hey everyone! Welcome back! I hope everyone is staying safe. So today I’m back with a Disney movie: Soul. It's a newer addition to Disney movies, but I really liked it.

So the movie focuses on this jazz musician- Joe- who has never really got his shot to become a big time musician and 22 a soul who has not found their “spark.” A soul’s spark is kind of what makes them want to live, what gives them their “Earth badge” so they can go and live on Earth. The movie really is beautiful because it gives a different perspective to look at life and how or even why a person lives their life.

22 believes that they will never find their spark and Joe believes that his spark is music and so music has to be his purpose. However, during the movie when 22 is trying to find their spark and Joe is trying to fulfil his purpose, you can see that life is not just about your purpose, life is everything that happens on your journey to fulfilling your purpose. It shows that your spark or passion, whatever you call it, is meant to be something that makes you happy or makes you feel calm, it isn’t supposed to make you sad or miserable. What I think the moviemakers are trying to say is that your spark, your passion, does not have to be your purpose. Basically what I interpreted was that my spark does not have to be the thing that I chase or it isn’t the whole reason I’m alive, my spark or my passion makes my life easier. I can choose to make a career from my spark or I can keep it to myself and let myself be happy whenever I want to explore it. Another thing that I realized is that your spark does not have to be anything big, it can be as small as the joy you get from smelling flowers or as big as being a first responder, even something seemingly insignificant as spinning a sign (that’s a reference to the movie). Your spark is not your purpose to live, it makes you want to be alive but it is not something you can fulfil or achieve because you already have it. I know it sounds confusing, it makes a lot more sense in the movie.

Another thing that I really liked is the connection you see between Joe and 22. They have a rough start but their connection comes from a place of understanding and a redefinition of living life. I think it also shows that it doesn’t matter how a person looks, it matters how a person is, like their personality. I know this is a bigger topic, but it is important to remember that people did not choose to be a certain race, or caste, or ethnicity, etc, we were not given a choice on how we look but we do choose how to behave and treat others so treat others how you would want to be treated. A connection between two people should not be based on how they look, but how well their souls can understand (and maybe even love) each other. If you haven’t watched the movie I hope you do, and if you have I hope I did it justice (you decide that).

SAPPINESS SCALE: HAPPY

Thanks for reading! And stay safe and healthy!
